The jury valued 74,470 photographs by 4,315 photographers before selecting the winners in eight categories: general news, sports, environment and portraits.
Mads Nissen graduated from the Danish School of Journalism in 2007 and moved to Shanghai to photograph the consequences of China's economic rise. She is the second time he has won the award for the best photography of the year awarded by the World Press Photo Foundationthe previous time was in 2015. He is now based in Copenhagen and works as a photographer for the Danish newspaper Politiken.
